are bandhas engaged in these exercises?
Good question. I seem to remember Ramaswami quoting Krishnamacharya as saying something along the lines of there not being much point practicing pranayama without engaging the bandhas. However, my understanding is that Kapalibhati is not strictly speaking pranayama but rather a cleansing technique, a kriya. I do tend to engage mula bandha but perhaps more out of habit. I will ask Ramaswami for more clarification.
